I was surprised by the “suspension” effect this saddle provides. Actually this can be explained if one consider the difference in construction when comparing to a “plastic” saddle. In a plastic saddle, a rigid shell provides support, and padding is added for comfort. Little “suspension”, or “travel”, is offered by this combination. In a leather saddle the leather element is tensioned and yields under load, thus allowing travel, or suspension. The net result is that I fond this saddle more comfortable on bumpy and rough roads than a plastic saddle. Clearly the shape of the leather piece places here a vital role, as there is no compliance offered by foam or gel to relieve the pressure areas: the leather is much harder. However, it seems that the shape of a Brooks saddle has been formed in a particularly clever way, so it can adapt to … most of us. The above required a careful positioning of the saddle. I found that even 3-4 mm difference in the saddle front/aft location makes a big difference, as it avoids me splipping towards the handlebar. Finally, I have been riding now several hours and I see no sign of the two dimples that someone says would be forming magically at the highest pressure points, these dimples being the miracle explaining why Brooks saddles are so comfortable. The saddle looks brand new. This is actually is no surprise as it is supposed to keep its shape for thousands of hours of use. A last remark: for me this saddle is perfect for the daily commuting to work (30 to 45’) but I keep my good padded plastic saddle for longer tours (up to 8 hrs per day).
